PEARC22 Student Program Call for Participation

PEARC22 Student Program Call for Participation
The PEARC22 Student Program is seeking applicants! Apply today and experience all that the PEARC Student Program has to offer.
As part of PEARC22, the Student Program offers five full days of professional development designed to help scholars envision themselves working in research computing and data science careers within academia, industry, and government agencies. This year’s Student Program features the following highlights:

Orientation and Welcome Reception
During orientation, members of the SP committee will let everyone know what to expect during the week. Any students who requested to be paired with a mentor will meet them for the first time.

Technical Program
PEARC’s Technical Program offers students opportunities to compete with and learn from the most experienced researchers from every computation- and data-intensive domain.

Student Volunteer Program
This is a great way for students to gain an understanding of how conferences are managed and to network with other students who are passionate about advanced research computing.

Resumé Clinic and PitchIT Workshop
During the PitchIT workshop, students have the opportunity to craft a unique elevator pitch and “PitchIT” to committee members and invited guests. Students who are applying for grad school or employment will appreciate the PEARC SP Resumé Clinic.

Internship Spotlight
Students who have participated in internships with government, academic, and industry settings share their experiences.

Student Mentor Program
First-time conference attendees or students who have just begun to envision themselves in an RCD career are paired with experienced mentors.

Exhibitor Q&A, Networking Event
Students will meet one-on-one with PEARC22 exhibitor representatives who share their enthusiasm for advanced computing, visualization, data analysis, and research.

The Village! (New)
In The Village, students and trainers alike will get a chance to explore novel training programs, receive hands-on peer training, and learn about competition strategies and open-source toolkits that were optimized during the pandemic.

Mason Alumnus Jenna Cann to speak at the Virginia Women in HPC meeting January 25th 2022

When:
January 25, 2022 @ 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Cost:
Free

We are proud to announce the founding of Virginia’s first Women in High-Performance Computing (VA-WHPC) program. Join us for our first event of 2022: Female research leaders of the Commonwealth sharing and discussing how HPC has facilitated their scientific research and professional careers.

Topic: How does HPC help with your scientific research — Faculty perspectives, Part II

Featured Speakers:

• Anne Brown – Virginia Tech

An Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, Science Informatics Consultant and Health Analytics Coordinator at Virginia Tech. Her research interests include utilizing computational modeling to answer biological questions and aid in drug discovery and the application of computational molecular modeling to elucidate the relationship between structure, function, and dynamics of bio-molecules.

• Jenna Cann – George Mason University

A postdoctoral fellow at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Jenna received a PhD in Physics from George Mason University. Her research focuses on studying black holes in dwarf and low metallicity galaxies, in an effort to constrain the origins of supermassive black holes that can be up to billions of times the mass of our Sun. To do this, they use both theoretical modeling with the Cloudy spectral simulation code and infrared and X-ray observations to determine the most effective ways to find these elusive objects. Jenna currently serves as a co-officer in the NASA Goddard Association for Postdoctoral and Early Career Scholars (NGAPS+) and was a co-founder of the GMU Physics and Astronomy department’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) organization, SPECTRUM.

• Alexis Edwards – Virginia Commonwealth University

An Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research focuses on understanding the etiology of substance use disorders, suicidal behavior, and internalizing problems, including how these outcomes are related to one another.

Time:    Jan 25, 2022 01:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)

ARGO and HOPPER clusters now available.

Thank you for your patience.

I am happy to announce that both the ARGO and HOPPER clusters are available now.

Any jobs that were pending or running on January 3rd, will have to be resubmitted.

Users will likely notice the biggest changes in the ARGO cluster as the contributor partition on this cluster has been updated to match the contrib queue policies of HOPPER.  We will shortly post more detailed information about this on this site and also circulate it on the mailing list.

Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

January Cluster Maintenance extended to Monday January 10th.

ARGO and HOPPER down time extended through Monday Jan 10th

Due to unforeseen problems with building access and weather this past week, regrettably our work schedule has been forced to slip.  We now plan to make the clusters available at 5pm on Monday the 10th of January. We apologize for the additional inconvenience.   As usual, please contact [email protected] with any questions or concerns

Winter Break – important information.

Holiday Greetings

George Mason University and the ORC will be closed for the winter break from end of day Dec 17th 2021 until January 3rd 2022. During this time there will be no on-site support. We will monitor for outages and critical issues, but help tickets may not receive a response until we return.

Happy Holidays – ORC Staff

STATA now available on HOPPER via Open OnDemand

GUI access to the popular statistics application STATA is now available via Open OnDemand on the HOPPER Cluster.   There is a limit of 5 concurrent Stata sessions as the license is shared with the Campus Citrix Virtual Computing and Patriot Virtual Computing clusters run by ITS.
